Walkie talkies were designed during World War 2 for military communications. These devices make use of low-level radio transmitters and receivers which makes them a portable communication device. The two-way communication featured in CB radio using 40 channels is used by most of the adults. They gained their popularity due to craze of CB radio communication in mid 1970s. The toy model of walkie talkies was most famous among the children and they are the biggest customers of this device.
The frequencies used for these and CB radio were same at that period. Channel 14 was the most common channel assigned for communication through walkie talkie. Anyone interested in the conversation could tune the CB radio accordingly. But this can only be accomplished if the CB radio was in range of toy wakie talkie which was of few hundred yards. Toy walkie talkies were mainly used in the market because they were low powered device having limited range, so they don't require any FCC license.
The frequency used by cordless phones and baby monitors were also used in the later model of walkie talkies. But the issues like interference and privacy which were created with the use of walkie talkies were raised. Therefore, there is a decline in the use of these, which was also affected with the advent of cellular phone systems.
In today's period walkie talkies enjoys the popularity as 'two way radio'. The device have resurged by different manufactured and now these devices are not intercepted the CB radio frequencies. FCC has assigned 14 different channels for these devices. Now almost all two way radio devices use FRS (Family Radio System) bandwidth. Within each channel there are 38 sub-channels, only those devices can pick up the broadcast which are tunes to that specific sub-channel. Therefore these sub-channels provide more private communication opportunities through two way radio devices. Voice scrambling technology is also used in some advance versions. With the use of this technology the message can be electrically distort during the transmission.
The range of the new walkie talkies are also increased to 2 miles or more. These devices are used by people and family members in a large shopping center or in a public event. With the use of these devices they can be in touch and can communicate. Any two way radio device with the range of 5 miles or more should be used after the issuing of the license by FCC. More advance versions are also available in the market with additional features like weather channel tuner, global positioning system, hand free voice command and compass.
